AFC Program

The United Arc’s Adult Family Care (AFC) is a residential program for individuals age 16 and older who cannot safely live alone because of medical, physical, cognitive or psychiatric problems. Individuals live with family members or in the homes of skilled Caregivers in the community instead of institutional settings. Nurse management, social work support and supervised daily personal care are provided. Individuals receive a private room and all meals. They are assisted with personal and medical care as needed, as well as transport to appointments.

Caregiver families are provided initial and ongoing training. They receive a tax-exempt, monthly stipend and receive two weeks' paid vacation a year. Staff members are always available to Caregiver families and individuals through the United Arc’s on-call system. Family members can apply to become Caregiver providers unless they are the parents of a minor child who would be the AFC client, the spouse of the client or a legally responsible relative (such as a guardian) of the client.
