June Constant Contact Update

June is here already! On June 24th we will hold our annual Family Support Picnic at Camp Keewanee, and Frontier Club will be holding their Self Advocacy Prom at the Athol Town Hall on June 13th! We are collecting diapers here at 294 Avenue A all month for low-moderate income families in need, which will culminate in the United Way Day of Action Franklin County Diaper Driveon June 20th at the Greenfield Town Common! Despite being a necessity for babies and small children, diapers aren't covered by traditional assistance programs, and families often struggle to purchase them. This drive will help alleviate this cost to families and give much needed relief to babies in need of a change!

We have also announced the date of Ed Porter's Retirement Party for August 26th! Make sure to mark your calendars and prepare your stories to share.

The FY2016 state budget is coming along and is now in conference committee. Both the House and senate showed strong support for programs supporting people with I/DD, and we are supporting a combination of the two versions. Please take a minute to email your legislators to thank them for prioritizing supports for people with disabilities and their families, and encourage them to support the conference committee suggestions below.

Awards Ceremonies & Annual Meetings

On May 15th, GAAAFSN held their Annual Meeting and honored Bill Graziano, Mary Lunny, and Quabbin Mediation for their commitment and support of people with I/DD and the North Quabbin Community. GAAAFSN's first year of scholarships were awarded to Krista Bailey, Robert Godley, Halden Charter, and Brittany Miller, with Nathaniel Marshall receiving the Hinchey Scholarship in honor of Virginia & Patrick Hinchey. Special recognition was also given to Bill Hinchey by Board Member Doreen Gallien. Thanks to Susannah Whipps-Lee for helping honor these community members!

On the 21st, we held The United Arc Annual Meeting at Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory with an amazing turnout! Barbara Morrell received the Marguerite Canedy award for her long-standing commitment to the I/DD community, and Kathy Arsenault and Betsy Misch were recognized as employees of the year. Americorps volunteers BJ Miller, Ness Bellini, and Bobby Falco-Killoran, and Family Friends volunteers also received recognition for their work supporting our families. We were also honored to recognize the legal team behind the recent landmark case affirming the rights of parents with disabilities to raise their children. We closed the evening with a recognition of Ed Porter's many years of service to The United Arc with words from Arc family members and long-time colleagues.
